As the last paved step was laid
leading to this special White House
the young slave looked up and thought.
His eyes reflected his dream of hope.
The dream of a day when from a tribe
of slave born children, a chosen one
would walk those steps, as the highest in the land. .
And as the sixty five year old nigger
was thrown out of the white bar
he raised his fist and cried,
One day you will know that
what you did will make a deep echo .
There will be the like of us
taking the sacred oath of President.
Then only will a nation rise above prejudice.
Then only will a people all unite.
Then only will colour, creed and race
come together in unity, a singularity
as One.. Then only will a leader emerge
where only courage and love can reflect choice.
That choice we now know as Barack Obama
The saviour of our New America.
Merlyn Swan 2009
After the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America
